Anderson Cooper was born in New York City on June 3, 1967, to a writer name Wyatt Emory Cooper and a designer and railroad heiress Gloria Vanderbilt. In his early years, Anderson was accustomed to his mother’s high-class lifestyle and the people she associated with. As a baby he was photographed for the cover of Harper’s Bazaar by Diane Arbus, and later participated in a modeling gig, being in ad campaigns for companies such as Macy’s and Ralph Lauren.
In 1978, Cooper’s father died during an open-heart surgery. Later on his brother, Carter, committed suicide by jumping to his death from their mother’s apartment in New York. Both tragedies gave him a push to have a career in news. Anderson later enrolled at the Dalton School, a private Manhattan institution. He graduated in 1985 attending Yale University and studied political science. He was also interning with the CIA.
After he graduated from Yale, Anderson began his news career with a job as a fact checker for Channel One. He then took a video camera with him to Southeast Asia, and his film in Myanmar and parts of Africa landed him a job to the chief international correspondent for Channel One.
In 1995, he was hired by ABC News as a correspondent and next a co-anchor of World News Now. He left in 2000 to host a new ABC reality show, The Mole. He later came back to cover the terrorist attacks of 2001. In 2003, CNN gave Cooper his own news show, Anderson Cooper 360°, where he was able to cover the world’s biggest stories for more than a decade. This shows he was an amazing success. Since 2006, Cooper has been on CBS covering news on 60 minutes. Cooper’s success has earned him many awards over the years, including Emmy Award nominations and eight wins.
